Singing with the Angels

Over the last several months, I have been struck with the frequency of hymnic references to angelic praise, particularly in reference to believers praising God.  Here are some of those references:

“Angels in the height, adore Him; Ye behold Him face to face; Saints triumphant bow before Him; Gathered in from every race; Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace.” (“Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”)

“Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host . . . ” (“Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun”)

“To You all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing, The cherubim and seraphim their praises to you bring.” (“We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God”)

“Cherubim and seraphim, falling down before thee…” (“Holy, Holy, Holy”)

“Praise as in ages past, praise as in glory now…”

“Like the holy angels, who behold Thy glory, May I never cease to praise Thee.” (“God Himself Is With Us”)

“Hark, the glad celestial hymn Angels choirs above are raising; Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising; Fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord.” (“Holy God, We Praise Thy Name”)

“All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall…O that with yonder sacred throng We at His feet may fall!  We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown Him Lord of all.” (“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”)

“Sing, suns and stars of space, Sing, ye that see His face, May Jesus Christ be praised!” (“May Jesus Christ Be Praised”)

“Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above” (“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”)

And the above references are just what have come forth in the first two and a half months of this year’s congregational singing in our church, without consciously trying to multiply such references.  Here are others:

“Praise the Lord! ye heav’ns, adore Him; Praise Him angels in the height” (“Praise the Lord! Ye Heavens, Adore Him”)

“‘Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!’  Let all cry aloud, and honor the Son; The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, Fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb. . . . Then let us adore, and give Him His right — All glory and pow’r, all wisdom and might, All honor and blessing, with angels above, And thanks never ceasing, and infinite love.” (“Ye Servants of God”)

“Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight” (“Immortal, Invisible”)

“Praise Him, ye angels, praise Him in the heavens, Praise ye Jehovah!” (“Praise Ye the Triune God”)
